CHAPTER 16

Tyler, Mamadou, and everyone else in the office were dumbfounded. Jake had just explained to them his working hypothesis: that they were looking for a teenager, someone who had school on the weekday and plenty of free time at the weekend.

‘It’s logical,’ Mamadou said, folding his arms across his chest at the head of the briefing room. ‘But also highly improbable.’

Jake shrugged. ‘I mean, what else have we got? What other information have we found?’

‘Lots actually,’ DC Lilly Hallam said. ‘Sharif’s mobile phone was somehow miraculously recovered from the crime scene, and the data on there has told us everything we need to know – it’s just taken us a while to extract the information.’ Lilly produced a file from her lap and placed it on the desk. ‘They’ve been using an app called Telegram. It’s like WhatsApp, except better in more covert—’

‘Who’s they?’ Jake asked.

‘Sharif and a person who only refers to himself as “Z”.’

‘Z?’

Lilly nodded.

‘Any idea what the pseudonym’s for?’

Lilly shook her head.

‘Anything else?’

‘Yes. The mobile number’s registered to an address in Milton Keynes.’

‘Registered to who?’

Lilly hesitated as the suspense grew. Jake noticed a flicker on her lips. ‘It’s registered to a Mr Mohamed Al-Fasil. But he has a son called Zain.’

‘Z…’ Jake said, feeling pride swell within him.

‘It appears that way, yes.’

‘And is it still on?’ Jake struggled to suppress the smug smile. He’d been right, and he should never have been made to doubt his intuition.

‘Last ping was ten minutes ago outside a supermarket in Haversham.’

‘Have we sent anybody down there?’ Mamadou asked, his voice dominating the room.

‘Not yet, guv.’

‘OK,’ Mamadou said. ‘I want local forces deployed on that address and I want Master Zain Al-Fasil arrested immediately. This little fucker’s a menace to society and we can’t have him operating his terror cell any longer. Stuart, Tanner – I want you to get down there and conduct the interview. I’ll get the local officers to seize any mobiles, computers, laptops, anything that’ll help us get to the bottom of this. Lilly, Carmichael – I want you to go down there with them too, but I want you to set up shop in the local station. The team here will get in contact with the local police to let them know you’re coming. What are you waiting for?’
